Whooping Cough Vaccine is now Required!

Dear Parents,

Beginning July 1, 2011, the California Public Health Department has determined proof of a “Whooping Cough” (Pertussis) vaccine booster is required for all students in grades 7 through 12:

Pertussis is widespread. If your child, 10 years and older, has not yet received the “Tdap” Pertussis booster shot, please contact your doctor or health department. Getting a booster shot now will protect your child against the ongoing threat of Pertussis and meet a new school requirement that begins in the 2011-2012 school year (California law – Assembly Bill 354).

The new law requires public and private school students to be immunized against whooping cough as follows: For the 2011-2012 school year only, all students entering grades 7 through 12 need to show proof of a Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) booster shot before starting school. This requirement can be met by receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine on or after the 7th birthday. Adults are also advised to get a Tdap booster shot to protect themselves and their families.

In order to prepare for this, the Chino Valley Unified School District recommends that you arrange for your student(s) in grades 6-12 to obtain the required Tdap booster vaccine through your family physician, local Health Department Clinic, or through our CVUSD Health Center in the next several months. You may bring proof of the vaccine to the school office. Vaccine clinics are offered at the CVUSD Health Center on the first and third Fridays of the month (8-11am) for students who have Medi-Cal or lack insurance. Additionally, for those students who have Medi-Cal or lack insurance we will hold vaccine clinics on April 13 at Magnolia Junior High and April 14 at Ramona Junior High (MPR, 2:30- 4:30pm). Please call the Health Services Office (909) 628-1201 x6780 or visit their website for clinic details.

You will need to provide a stamped California Immunization Record (yellow) card as proof of the Tdap booster vaccine (Adacel or Boostrix) prior to the start of the 2011-2012 school year.
